Orphu is a Moravec from Io, roughly three meters tall and six meters long, outfitted for work in the hard vacuum of space. He is deeply knowledgeable of Proust and Joyce. In light of his eventual blindness, his expertise at storytelling, and his Ionian origins, Orphu is an analog to the blind Ionian storyteller Homer.
On the other hand, his name evokes Orpheus, legendary poet and musician, who wrote the Orphic Hymns, and whose life is woven into Greek mythology. On the third hand, the book also links Orphu to Shakespeare's Falstaff.
